Denim jackets can enhance an outfit, making it more casual or, depending on the style of the jacket, a little edgier. Denim fabric was originally brown, textile workers began using indigo to dye it blue, and it was then called Bleu de Genes, or blue jeans. A French family in Nîmes, France created a dyed, cotton fabric called serge de Nîmes, which is the origin of the word "denim."

Denim jackets started as an accompaniment to denim pants, with the same design and features of the classic jean. While a demand for that classic cut will always exist, there is now an array of denim jackets to choose from that vary in terms of color, style, embellishments, and price. There are three types of denim used in manufacturing denim jackets: raw denim, which is not washed after being dyed; selvage denim, which does not unravel; stretch denim, which includes some elastic; and color denim, which can be either indigo dyed or sulfur dyed.

Some denim jackets also feature embellishments such as sequins, colorful stitching, beading, or fringe. These decorative enhancements can add a splash of color to the standard indigo and help the wearer stand out from the pack. Because jean jackets are made from cotton, they do not provide much warmth, but are instead intended as a layering piece. Some denim jackets feature a warm lining, but would still get wet in rainy or snowy conditions.
